Well, I made it through May, managing to knit and/or crochet every day! The month is finished (Happy June & start of Summer in this part of the world!), and my t-shirt yarn tote is finished as well.
It’s really heavy, but would be perfect for a day at the beach, at a picnic or other outing. I may use it to carry things into the office this Summer. You know, snacks, drinks, candy (!), makeup,… all those necessary things we take with us to help get through the work day.
This was a fun project; it worked up quickly; and the Clover M/N (9.0mm) crochet hook made it easy (I’m really sold on these hooks - and hadn’t been prior, so this is a BIG takeaway for me).
I’m not sure I’d buy t-shirt yarn again, primarily because I prefer projects in worsted or DK, and there’s only so many hours in a day!
I’d you’re interested in the pattern, here’s what I did to get this bag:
With M/N (9.0mm) crochet hook, chain 36. Make a SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and continue across. In the last chain, make 3 SC and then turn and make SC across the other side of the beginning chain.
When you get to the end, make 2 SC in last stitch and slip stitch to the chain that you skipped at the beginning.
Continue crocheting around. I did not join rounds, but crocheted continuously. You could do it that way OR slip stitch at the end of each round.
When I got the height that I wanted, I started the straps by joining the selected yarn at about 5 stitches in from the end, and made 5 SC stitches.
I crocheted 5 SC across and chained 1 at the end of each town until I had the length that I wanted.
I did a final row with the main color (blue on mine) and slip stitched through the end of the straps to secure a bit more. Fasten off, weave in the ends and trim.
That’s it! Lots of variations are possible, and I think I’m going to use the left over t-shirt yarn to make a small drawstring pouch to go with the tote.
This has been a fun project, and I’m tickled with the results! What a great yarn activity the “Knit or Crochet Every Day in May” has been!!
Now, on to the Summer Yarn Crawl season!
Keep on stitchin’ !!
