I recently watched a YouTube video on how to make a sunglasses case/pouch and it reminded me of other patterns I have seen over the years. As often happens with ALL of us who knit or crochet for any length of time, I wanted to make edits here and changes there. I ended up with a slightly different pattern, inspired by several crochet designers and years of my own experience.

I'm sharing that pattern here.

In other patterns, COTTON yarn is often suggested, but I found the cotton yarn in my stash to be a bit stiff and not to my liking. I went back to my stash and found a skein of Lion Brand Truboo, which is soft, flexible and in my opinion, an ideal fiber for a sunglasses holder.

Here's what you need to make this quick & fun item:

  • Yarn: a skein of Truboo (or similar weight) yarn

  • Crochet hook: (US) Size F

  • Scissors

  • A darning needle

  • Finishing:

    • cord lock

    • shoelace or other cord in a color that coordinates with your yarn

      • you could also crochet a long chain and use that as the tie

Pattern

  • Chain (ch) 16

  • Row 1: Working in the "bump" at the back of the chain, make a Single Crochet (SC) in the 2nd chain from the hook, and all the way across (15 sts); ch 1 and turn.

  • Row 2: SC in the same stitch (base of the Ch 1 st); * SC and Double Crochet (DC) in next stitch; skip (SK) the next stitch*; then make a SC and DC in the next stitch. Repeat between * * across until last stitch. SC in last stitch, ch 1 and turn

  • Row 3: SC in the base of the Ch 1. In next stitch, SC and DC; skip (SK) the next stitch. Put Repeat across (SC/DC in next stitch, SK 1 stitch) until you have 2 stitches left (you should have just finished making a SC/DC). Skip a stitch and place a SC in the last stitch. Ch 1 and turn.

    • NOTE: you will now have 16 sts across each row. This means you will begin each row with a SC in the base of the Ch 1 and a SC/DC in the next stitch - and end each row with the last 3 sts being: SC/DC, sk 1 st, SC in last stitch.

  • Rows 4 - 26: Repeat Row 3 until your piece measure at least 6 1/2" (or the length you plprefer for your sunglasses pouch).

  • Fasten off.

  • Make 2.

Assembly:

  • Align the 2 sides and SC around, beginning at the top and going down one side, across the bottom and up the other side. Place 2 SC in each corner to ease around.

  • When you get back up to the TOP, SC around the opening (32 sts). When finished, join with a Slip Stitch, and Ch 2.

  • DC in the next stitch, and ch 1

  • Skip 1 st and DC into the next 2 sts. Repeat this around, and join with a Slip Stitch to the top of the Ch 2.

  • Ch 1 and SC around the opening 1 more time to add a finished edge to the top of the pouch.

  • Slip stitch to the beginning Ch 1 and fasten off.

  • Thread the cord through the Ch 1 spaces, add the cord locks, knot ends
