The Healing Power of Yarn

Writer's picture: Rebecca (a yarn enthusiast)Rebecca (a yarn enthusiast)

Sometimes, healing comes through a skein of yarn and a small, aluminum crochet hook (or knitting needle).

Crafts, and I am writing specifically about YARN crafts, have always had the ability to create doors where there once were walls and bridges over the most turbulent waters.

I recently had the opportunity to see this in action - to see how a seed planted years ago came full circle and, literally, one stitch at a time, began to stitch together a relationship that had been almost severed completely.

I've written before about how my grandmother taught me to crochet a chain when I was 10 years old and how that tiny seed has grown into a beloved hobby that not only brings me a lot of joy, but has enabled me to share some of that joy with others. I was recently able to pass on (pay forward) the blessing of that seed, and watch as it began to grow into a tiny thread of hope and healing.

I have known for some time, and research has demonstrated, that there is a great benefit to the activities of crocheting and knitting. These benefits include the reduction of stress. lowering of blood pressure, easing the symptoms of depression and even helping to lessen chronic pain (see also the PDF posted below for another study from the UK on the benefits of knitting, and by association, also crocheting).

I continue to be amazed at the amount of GOOD that some yarn, an aluminum hook (or a pair of needles) and a simple pattern can bring into someone's world, and feel deeply fortunate to have been able to witness this simple but powerful healing practice at work in a special person's life at a time when they needed it most.

If you have the gift (crochet and/or knitting skills) and the chance to do so, pass it on. You never know when or how it will show up for someone at a time when they need it most.

So yeah, a yarn stash is a source of happiness, as well as frustration, and sometimes even chagrin (why do I keep bringing more yarn home!?). This weekend I learned that a well-stocked yarn stash can ALSO be a first aid kit of sorts for healing of a different kind.
